The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) approves safety improvements on Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, NY. Sadly, Atlantic Avenue has for decades been the place where fatal accidents have occurred.

This week The NYC DOT) announced, after years and years of community advocacy, DOT will be making badly needed safety improvements to the western section of Atlantic Avenue, that the community has been hoping and pleading for.

According to New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriquez “The safety improvements will include, new pedestrian space, the deployment of two full time traffic enforcement agents, vehicle lane markings to reduce conflicts at Court Street; two new concrete pedestrian islands at Columbia Street; new mid-block crosswalks between Court Street and Clinton Street, and Henry Street and Clinton Street and curb enhancements such as loading zones.”

Senator Andrew Gounardes says “Atlantic Avenue is a community hub full of restaurants, bars and other great local businesses, but for too long, the roadway has been designed to prioritize cars speeding through, not creating a place for neighbors and visitors to safely be.”

According to Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso “Atlantic Avenue has for too long been defined by danger and death.” “Thanks to Councilmember Lincoln Resler, a coalition of electeds, and an outpouring of community advocacy, that's finally beginning to change.” “The significant safety upgrades that NYC DOT is making will begin to rebuild this street around the safety of our people.”

Over the past number of years there have been approximately 500 crashes on the western section of Atlantic Avenue, which runs through three Brownstone neighborhoods – Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill and Boerum Hill and Downtown Brooklyn.

Kelly Carroll, Executive Director of the Atlantic Avenue BID says “It's like I-95 running through your neighborhood.” “It's unfathomable that human beings are killed by vehicles on Atlantic Avenue when we have a citywide speed limit of 25 miles per hour.”

Councilmember Lincoln Resler said “We've all known how unsafe Atlantic Avenue has been for decades.” “I grew up a couple of blocks from here. It's been unsafe my whole life. Every family in Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill and Boerum Hill worries that their children are unsafe around Atlantic Avenue.”

According to Assembly member Jo Ann Simon “It's a new DOT today.” “These street safety improvements couldn't have come fast enough and will make a real difference in the lives of the people in this area.”

According to Lara Birnback, Executive Director of the Brooklyn Heights Association “We thank the DOT for recognizing the urgency of these lifesaving interventions and taking action to make things better in the immediate, while they continue to study and plan for additional measures in the future.”
