A request for proposals has been released for Coney Island West, the first city owned parcel in Coney Island, Brooklyn NY.
Mayor Eric Adams and the New York City Economic Development Corporation are planning for 1,500 new mixed income residential units, retail space and other public improvements which include the reconstruction of Reigelmann Boardwalk, a $42M renovation to the Abe Stark Sports Center, shoreline enhancements along Coney Island Creek against storm surges, sewer upgrades and new streets.
Coney Island West is bound by Surf Avenue to the north, Coney Island beach to the south, Maimonides Park to the east and West 23rd Street to the West.
Mayor Adams said “We are delivering mixed-income affordable housing, investing $42M to renovate the Abe Stark Sports Center and making significant improvements across streets, sewers and the public realm.” “Coney Island's best days still lie ahead. Today, we started the next chapter in its bright future.”
Part of the redevelopment masterplan will include several large residential towers West of Maimonides Park. The Abe Stark Sports Center will have an exterior renovation, a new entrance, boardwalk signage, large scale murals, upgrades to the ice arena and other amenities to be announced.
Parcel A, the 80,000 square foot tract on the western edge of the rezoning area along Surf Avenue, between west 21st street and west 22nd street will have more than 500 mixed income homes, 25% of which will be dedicated to affordable housing and ground floor retail spaces.
Future upgrades will be announced in stages as the development progresses along with finalized renderings for each of the new buildings that will be built.
