Metro Tech Center Is Now Brooklyn Commons

It's truly amazing to see how Brooklyn neighborhoods have evolved and prospered over the years.

In the late 1980's – early 1990's when Metro Tech Center was built, New York City and Downtown Brooklyn were commercially depressed with businesses moving out of the city.

In the first few years after Forrest City Ratner and Polytechnic Institute built Metro Tech Center, the complex was gated off at night because the surrounding area was considered unsafe. Metro Tech was originally built as a self contained complex to accommodate back office and data processing space to large companies.

Brookfield Properties purchased Metro Tech in 2018 from Forrest City Ratner Trust, parent of Forrest City Ratner.

Today, Downtown Brooklyn has been transformed into a thriving commercial and residential district.

Brookfield Properties is re imagining Metro Tech as the now named Brooklyn Commons as a “vibrant hub for business, education, art, culture and community” says Callie Haines Executive V.P. And head of New York, Brookfield Properties. Haines continues by saying “Embracing and building upon the areas momentous growth, we are repositioning Brooklyn Commons as an integrated, open campus for the 21st century”.

The renaming will translate into a $50M investment by Brookfield to renovate several of the office buildings within the campus and upgrade the 3.6 acre public park space and build out year round arts and cultural events programming that is free and open to the public. The park renovations led by landscape architect James Corner will include enhanced outdoor seating, new lighting, new signage, new wayfinding, redesigned landscaping, seasonal gardens and plantings.

Arts Brookfield, an award winning cultural events program will curate free events including theatre performances, outdoor movie nights, exercise classes, a children's book fair, live music, an ice skating rink, holiday celebrations and food festivals.
