Landmarks Conservancy 2025 Awards Given To The Brooklyn Bridge and Grand Army Plaza Restoration Projects
The awards given to the Brooklyn Bridge and the Soldiers and Sailor's Memorial Arch at Grand Army Plaza top the list of five Brooklyn restoration projects that have won The New York Landmarks Conservancy's 2025 Lucy G. Moses Preservation Awards. The other three recipients are: 7 South Portland Avenue, a 19th Century brownstone mansion in Fort Greene that is now a Co op; 1450 Pacific Street, a 19th century Villa in Crown Heights and the 1939 “Exodus and Dance” frieze, featuring both Biblical and African imagery at NYCHA's Kingsborough Houses.
The awards will be given to these projects on April 22nd at the Edison Ballroom in Manhattan.
Peg Breen, President of The New York Landmarks Conservancy said “The Lucy's celebrate amazing preservation projects from throughout the city that might otherwise remain unheralded.”
The Brooklyn Bridge restoration spanned over 5 years, focused on conservation and repair of all historic masonry, including granite, limestone and brick at the iconic towers, archorages and arch blocks in Brooklyn and Manhattan. The towers have a new LED lighting system which highlights the restoration brilliantly at night.
The monumental Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch at Grand Army Plaza was dedicated in 1892 commemorating Union soldiers lost in the Civil War. John Hemenway Duncan was the architect form the 80 foot tall granite arch. Sculptor Frederick Mac Monnies and his colleagues embellished the arch with sculptural figures. The colossal piers have spiral staircases that lead to rooms intended to hold trophies. The NYC Parks Department has maintained the arch for decades. This project was a joint effort of NYC Parks Department and the Prospect Park Alliance. This project served to stabilize the structure, repaired, restored and cleaned the granite arch. A new roof, drainage and ventilation systems were installed, new steel beams will reinforce the roof structure and support the massive chariot sculpture at the top. New energy efficient lighting highlights the architectural and artistic features.
