We are following up on our August 27th2021 blog regarding the sale of the magnificent Grand Prospect Hall in the Brooklyn's Park Slope neighborhood located at 263 Prospect Avenue.
The Grand Prospect Hall was home to Brooklyn's oldest operating elevator!
Mr. Angelo Rigas of Gowanus Cubes was the buyer for this wonderful building as part of a 12 property assemblage with a sale price of $30M.
Although the Grand Prospect Hall was on the National Register of Historic Places since 1999, it had never been declared an official New York City Landmark.
Gowanus Cubes filed for a full demolition in August 2021, despite efforts to have the building landmarked.
The Grand Prospect Hall was built in the 1890's by German immigrant John Kolle. The original construction included restaurants, meeting halls, bowling alleys, a shooting range, a “bird cage” elevator, a roof garden and rare at that time electric lights. When the building burned down in 1900, Kolle immediately rebuilt it.
Over the years, Grand Prospect Hall hosted many functions with appearances by such stars as Fred Astaire, Sophie Tucker, Ginger Rogers and Lena Horne. The Grand Prospect Hall was also used as a film location for “The Cotton Club” , “Prizzi's Honor”, “ The Royal Tenenbaums”, “Gossip Girl' and more.
Gowanus Cubes has filed permits for a 5 story, mixed use building. The Grand Prospect Hall, sadly is in the final stages of demolition.
