Unfortunately, it's in the news almost every day. Pedestrian fatalities and serious car accidents are seemingly happening with more and more frequency.
The mayor's office and the DOT have recognized the urgency of serious action needing to happen to save lives.
The Department of Transit has a plan for Grand Army Plaza and the multi directional traffic surrounding the Plaza around Park Slope and Downtown Brooklyn especially during peak hours. The Department of Traffic is considering transforming Grand Army Plaza into a car free zone.
The potential plan is to connect Grand Army Plaza to Vanderbilt and Underhill Avenues. According to Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Transit Eric Beaton “preventing traffic injuries around Grand Army Plaza requires serious structural changes to the area, there's only so far you can get with paint, planters and barricades”.
Recently, a prominent pastor and mother of three was struck and killed in Flatbush.
Tragically, Brooklyn, NY remains the highest in pedestrian deaths among the 5 boroughs, according to “Vision Zero” reports started under Mayor Adams and the NYCDOT. However, the most recent data from Vision Zero indicates a 38% decrease in pedestrian deaths at intersections of interest in Brooklyn.
The proposal for Grand Army Plaza would decrease the volume of cars in dangerous areas and restrict times that traffic can flow.
