A greener, more pedestrian friendly Strip Center is in the future for Fulton Mall. Work will begin August 8th on an $8M Streetscape upgrade for this busy Fulton Mall Shopping Strip.

The project is called The Fulton Mall Streetscape Improvement Project and is a result of the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership, New York City Parks Department and the city's Department of Transportation working together. Funding for this project was provided by the mayor’s office.

New York City Parks Department will be beautifying the area by enlarging planting beds, installing new trees, new benches and permeable pavers next to the curb on Fulton Street, from Boerum Place to Flatbush Avenue.

Construction will be done in 9 phases with the work taking place only at night, from 8pm to 5am, Monday to Friday. Each phase will cover 2 blocks. Phase 1 will tackle the North side of Fulton Street, between Boerum Place and Jay Street. The Streetscape project completion is expected to be Fall 2025.

According to New York City's Parks Commissioner, Sue Donohue “With new street trees, tree pits and seating on the way for Fulton Street, Downtown Brooklyn is about to get even more beautiful.” “This project shows how multi agency collaboration and public-private partnerships can enhance our public spaces for the benefit of all New Yorkers.”

Part of a larger $40M Downtown improvement plan, the Fulton Mall Streetscape Improvement Project aims to improve Downtown Brooklyn's streetscape, transportation and public space, including pedestrian and roadway user safety enhancements and improved bus service announced by the city in 2023.

According to Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriquez, “Our goal is to shift Fulton Mall away from the old school, car centered model. Improvements include wider sidewalks, protected bike infrastructure and dedicated bike lanes.”

According to Downtown Brooklyn Partnership president Regina Myer “Downtown Brooklyn has become a thriving, mixed use neighborhood and these improvements will further enhance the Downtown experience for shoppers, office workers and residents alike.” ”Since it's 2004 rezoning, Downtown Brooklyn has experienced significant increases of residential population, new businesses and jobs.”

Looking forward, Downtown Brooklyn Partnership has been working on a larger, evolving “Public Realm Action Plan” with design firms WXY Architecture + urban design (WXY). The vision is to redesign Columbus Park, Borough Hall Plaza and the Korean War Veterans Plaza, which they call underutilized.
