Forrest for ALL NYC's Mission: Trees, Trees, Trees

Every year we blog about the greenest street award, given to the Brooklyn neighborhood/ streets where the residents truly recognize the importance of caring for their trees and gardens.

There is an organization named Forrest for ALL NYC which started in 2021 seeking to expand New York City's tree canopy up to 30% by 2035 and maintain the city's existing coverage. Forrest for ALL is a coalition that brings together approximately 150 organizations to meet its goal of planting and sustaining trees in an urban environment to fight the climate crisis and restore earth's natural assets.

According to Brooklyn's Prospect Park Alliance President, Morgan Monaco “Forrest for ALL envisions a healthy, biodiverse, robust, accessible, well understood and resilient urban forest that justly and equitably delivers its multiple benefits to all residents of New York City and helps the city adapt to and mitigate climate change.” “Our diverse and inclusive coalition is committed to working together to advance effective and lasting policies, plans, practices, research and investments.” “Collectively, these actions will help to protect, maintain, use, monitor, understand, promote and expand the NYC urban forest and ensure that it's benefits accrue throughout all stages of the life cycles of NYC's trees.”

When people think about climate change, typically what comes to mind are emissions from buildings, cars, trucks and airplanes. Some of the important interventions to climate change are capping emissions, converting to solar and conversion to wind.

According to Monaco,” The natural environment and urban forest play a really big role in mitigating the impacts of climate change.”

Forrest for ALL wants New Yorkers to connect with their urban forest and reach the goal of 30% canopy coverage by 2035.

As New Yorkers, we need to know the value of trees to our city.
