Who doesn't love great pizza? Go no further than one of Brooklyn's waterfront neighborhoods, DUMBO.
After 5 years of one issue after another with the NYC Dept of Buildings, the long anticipated opening of L& B Spumoni Gardens has finally happened! The original L&B is in the Gravesend neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York located at 2725 86th Street. I have been a fan of their upside down Sicilian pizza and spumoni ice cream for decades.
The new location at 46 Old Fulton Street, has the scrumptious magic of the original! My wife and I recently stopped by on our way home from a grocery shop at Wegmans and WOW! The pizza is a perfection, so very delicious! Charlie Cavallo, the general manager of the DUMBO location greeted us with a smile and warm welcome. You could see the pride and joy on his face that this opening finally happened.
The restaurant logo of a horse drawn carriage illustrates the original spumoni & pizza deliveries by founder Ludovico Barbati in 1939. You can see the logo mural on a wall facing the BQE as you drive by.
According to Charlie Cavallo, “We're taking it easy and expanding the menu daily. For now it'd dine in or pick up only, but deliveries will be coming down the road.” “We are really really excited to open. We had the friendliest welcome from neighbors, nice people strolling by with children and families.”
Cavallo adds “The secret is the ovens are new, but the pans are from the original location and that's the key.”
It doesn't hurt to also have the same pizza chefs from the 86th Street location, Franco Meza and Chef Salvatore Zapparata working with Executive Chef Leonardo Kern, who oversees everything.
The dining room menu includes some of Cavallo's favorite dishes “Linguini and clams, dueling shrimp and baked clams.”
There are other nearby pizza restaurants, Grimaldi's and Juliana's which sell traditional style whole pizzas.
Cavallo says “We are known for Sicilian upside down squares and our homemade spumoni ice cream.” “The more places open up in the area, the more people will come to the area. The best pizza in New York can be found right here in DUMBO. This is now going to be the pizza Mecca of New York!”
