It was held, just this past weekend. This event in Gowanus was a WOW! Approximately 500 artists invited folks into their private studios at 100 locations throughout the neighborhood for one of Brooklyn's best Art Parties!
These amazing artists let people see their latest work, chat about their process of creating art or chatting about other stuff, grab a snack, enjoy a cup of wine, maybe buy a print or a painting and just have a grand old time roving around the neighborhood exploring this wonderful Art event.
The event was the 27th annual Gowanus Open Studios, organized by the esteemed Arts Gowanus.
Despite the horrific damage the area suffered last month from the rain, the event was well attended by lively crowds of art curious and by art enthusiasts from 13th Street to Pacific Street on both sides of the canal.
Local artist Lesley Kushner said “I've had this studio (on Nevins Street) for 30 years and been a part of Gowanus Open Studios since it started”. “I love it. It's a great way to get people to see your work and share the artistic atmosphere of the neighborhood”.
Newcomer to Open Studios, Photographer Rima Brindamour opened her studio just over a year ago on the corner of Bond and Union Streets. Rima says “I live in Carroll Gardens and I love the community”. “There are lots of artists already here, and this space was sitting vacant for 10 years before I leased it”. Being able to look around freely at normally private artist's spaces was a great experience. Some studios are all done up like Michiyo Ihara's studio on Union Street with a surprising number of plants. One artist Axelle DeStaing exhibited her work in her home in her lovely kitchen overlooking her backyard on Carroll Street. To add to the events atmosphere, there were outdoor murals at construction sites to check out.
Kira Silver, Textile Arts Center (TAC) Director of Operations said “This is our third Gowanus Open Studios”. “It's wonderful to have so many people walking through so many different studios in the neighborhood. Our doors are always open to the public for tours, but sometimes it can be intimidating to stop into a space when you have to introduce yourself at the front desk. So, events like this make it easy for people to walk in and say hi and see everyone there. So yeah, it's really great for everyone”.
