Brooklyn Bridge Park is an 85 acre Civic masterpiece. After a long period of nothing happening, so many plans, controversies, objections and delays the park is one of the city's great public spaces.
The vision of hills, dales, meadows and wetlands came to be for the most part from MVVA, a team of landscape architects led by Michael Van Valkenburgh.
Long after he was paid for his services, along with Park staff, keep an active To Do List. This pride and obsessiveness coupled with the Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation's staff can be clearly seen in the lack of litter, the well kept benches, the working toilets and the thick profusion of plants.
The landscape designers rejected being defined by other parks as being a set of French style allees, a show garden of bravura horticulture, a mosaic of different activity zones or a picturesque emulation of wilderness. MVVA combined some of these models into a new kind of urban edge: spectacular but informal and tough enough to withstand crowds and violent weather. The Brooklyn Bridge Park's uniqueness makes it hard to copy, but it's hard not to try.
You can walk (or bike) along the water's edge from Atlantic Avenue, to the Brooklyn Bridge, across the East River, around the tip of Manhattan to Battery Park, and all the way up the Hudson via Riverside Park to the George Washington Bridge.
When Super Storm Sandy hit in 2012, still young plantings, took enormous amounts of salt water and most made it through healthy and intact.
