What a great way to start 2024! New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez declared that “The Brooklyn Bridge received a major new year's “glow up”.
The 140 year old bridge called America's Eiffel Tower by historian David McCullough was lit with 56 brilliant LED lights illuminating the bridges extraordinary towers. The cost of the new lighting system was $2.4M.
In 2024 New York City DOT will finish a 4 year, $300M project to thoroughly scrub harmful dirt and soot from every single stone on the bridge, restore the mortar between each stone and bring out the original light gray color.
DOT Commissioner Rodriguez says “One of New York City DOT's most cherished responsibilities is maintaining America's Eiffel Tower and the new lights will showcase it's beauty for decades to come”.
Landmarks Preservation Commission Chair Sarah Carroll says “The Brooklyn Bridge is one of New York's most cherished landmarks, recognized the world over as a symbol of our city”.
Brooklyn Bridge construction started in January 1869 and opened May 24, 1883 as the world's largest suspension bridge in the world. President Chester A. Arthur attended the bridge's grand opening and grand it was!
Today, an estimated 120,000 vehicles, 30,000 pedestrians and 4,000 cyclists use the bridge each day.
The truly transformative restoration work and newly efficient LED lighting system demonstrate New York City's powerful commitment to sustainability says LPC Chair Sarah Carroll.
