Mapleton, a Brooklyn NY neighborhood, along with Bay Ridge, Fort Hamilton and Dyker Heights all used to be part of a Dutch village known as New Utrecht.
This 100 year old Brooklyn neighborhood has been home to each new wave of immigration. The Italians claimed the southern part for Bensonhurst, while Hasidic and Orthodox Jewish families claimed the northern section for Borough Park. Now the Chinese, overflowing from Sunset Park have settled in the southwestern portion.
Mapleton is like a melting pot. On a typical block you'll find several Hasidic, several Italian American families and several Asian American families, all getting along very well.
In 1910 Mapleton was developed as Mapleton Park with brick homes built on 30x100 lots. The area was considered one of “The choicest home communities” in that part of Brooklyn. 18th and 20th Avenues are the main commercial streets with Asian grocers and bakeries and Italian Pork stores. Today in Mapleton there is a wonderful and vibrant mix of Italian, Jewish, Asian, Pakistan, Latino and Arab families.
